I'm anti-resolution and anti-Happy New Year, which makes me sound extremely grumpy and pessimistic. However, I always strive to deal with whatever comes my way with courage and the brightest spirit I can muster. No matter the year, we get joys and tragedies, most of them out of our control. The truth is that the wonderful and awful events of our lives don't respect the calendar. So, every d*mn day, I work on my attitude and acceptance. On top of my dad's terminal diagnosis, my mother is now suffering from shortness of breath, wheeziness and swollen ankles. That can't be good, right? Heart? I'm taking a whole bunch of deep breaths, and trying not to look too far ahead.
Any color along my walk is much appreciated during the winter!
Mari approves of the new carpet, although the installation has been a traumatic experience for me. The carpet guy showed up late, caused my house to smell like a distillery, banged up the skirt boards, scraped the freshly painted wall, and walked all over the hardwork with his wet waffle soled shoes. Then I remembered what my late husband (stair builder) used to say about carpet installers...and it wasn't very complimentary. They come in last to any job, and many of them aren't at all careful of other subs' work. In fact, my late husband would unleash quite a lot of interesting swear words on the subject.
It does look pretty though, doesn't it? Tomorrow Carpet Guy is coming back; he'll be taking off doors upstairs, pulling the carpet back to put in tack strips and I will probably lose my mind. Thankfully, I texted my painter, and he'll come back to fix the damage. Then I am truly DONE with home remodel for now! Perhaps sanity should be my resolution for 2021? ;) When I look for comfort, I read quotes, and I find wisdom in these words from Neil Gaiman:
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
